To apply for the scholarship, students must meet the below mentioned eligibility requirements:

  1. Educational Qualification
    • Students must have passed Class 12th or equivalent examination from a school in NER recognized by boards such as (AHSEC) Assam Higher Secondary Educational Council ,(CBSE) Central Board of Secondary Education , (ICSE) Indian Certificate of Secondary Education, (NIOS) National Institute of Open Schooling or others.
  2. Undergraduate Admission
    • Applicants must be enrolled in the first year of a recognized undergraduate degree program in India.
    • Courses must be approved and specified by the UGC.
  3. Parental Income
    • Annual family income should be less than ₹4.5 lakh. Students whose parents earn more than this limit are not eligible.
  4. Residence (Domicile)
    • Applicants must have a valid residence certificate from any state in NER.

The following students are not eligible:

  • Those pursuing courses through Open Universities.
  • Students receiving scholarships under other schemes.
  • Candidates admitted under the management quota.
  • Students pursuing diploma courses that do not lead to a degree.

Those whose parents earn more than ₹4.5 lakh per annum.

Before starting the application process, make sure that the following documents are ready:

  • Active Mobile Number for communication.
  • Aadhaar Number for identity verification.
  • Income Certificate issued by a competent authority.
  • Bank account linked with NPCI for direct benefit transfer.
  • Mobile Number Linked with Aadhaar for authentication.

Candidates will have to complete One-Time Registration (OTR) for National Scholarship Portal (NSP) starting from 2024-25 session. The application process involves two steps:

Step 1: One-Time Registration (OTR)

  1. Visit the NSP Portal and complete the OTR process.
  2. Provide an active mobile number for communication.
  3. Use Aadhaar for identity verification. If Aadhaar is not available, use the Enrollment ID (EID). For minors, Aadhaar of parent or guardian can be used.
  4. Complete eKYC Verification via the NSP OTR app and Aadhaar FaceRD app using face authentication.

Once registered, students will receive a unique OTR ID to use for all scholarship applications.

Step 2: Scholarship Application

  1. Log in to the NSP portal using your OTR ID and password.
  2. Fill in the required details  including academic records, current course information and family income.
  3. Upload the required documents and verify all the information.
  4. Submit the application and keep a copy for future reference.

The selection is based on state-wise merit from among eligible candidates who apply entirely online.

In case of a tie, the following criteria are used for shortlisting:

  • Class X Marks: Higher scores will be given preference.
  • Age: If Class X marks are equal then candidates with higher age will be given preference.

The scholarship results are usually declared in November or December, and students can check their status on the National Scholarship Portal or the UGC website.

The selected candidates receive financial assistance to continue their undergraduate education. The funds are transferred directly to the student’s bank account through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system of the National Scholarship Portal.
